I want to start this post off by saying that I admire artists who fearlessly continue to take risks even after recieving praise, accolades and a handsomely paying career in the art world. Artists like Lee Bontecou or Gerhard Richter for instance continue to grow as artists and their production does not sit still. I would also like to mention, at the risk of sounding like a jaded hipster, that I love Robert Rauschenberg's early work, you know this stuff because it was vital and important and very satisfying to look at. I could look at some of that work all day long and never get tired, but somewhere along the way, they became formulaic and he has been showing me the same thing again and again and it is more than obvious. His new exhibit at PaceWildenstein is a succinct example of the art world's Hero worship. I respect Rauschenberg as an artist for his contribution, it was great yet we as consumers, viewers, educated art participants should hold him to the same critical standards we hold everyone else. If we did that, then only one conclusion about his recent works comes to mind and it is the one that came to my mind when I left his new show: that he has grown comfortable and complacent, and Rauschenberg is no longer a challenging or vital artist. And that is just sad!
